1. A destructive pest present on all continents.
2. It is considered one of the most dangerous pests.
3. The adult is tiny, with a length of 1-2 mm, and its larvae of 0.3 mm.
Attacks and damage:
1. It attacks more than 400 species of plants.
2. In the vegetable garden, the greatest damage are done against onions, garlic, leeks and asparagus, the damage can go up to 70% of the crop.
3. The nematodes penetrate the attacked plant tissue, causing deformation of bulbs and the phenomenon called the “onion and garlic baldness”, ie roots separation.
4. Leaves remain short and they become yellow, the outer bulb scales thicken excessively, they crack, being unable to preserve.
5. The attacked plants are removed easily, due to the destruction of their roots.
6. It affects all the organs of the attacked plant: bulbs, tubers, stems, leaves, roots.
7. A density of 5-6 nematodes per square meter is sufficient for a generalized attack because after the complete growth the larvae leave the initial plant starting looking for other hosts.
The nematode females begin to lay eggs even at 1-3 ° C, but the optimum temperature is from 13 to 16 ° C.
The nematodes have 5-6 generations per year, covering the whole season of the attacked plants.
How to combat the nematode – bio methods:
– Manure administered on infested lands reduces the population of nematodes by stimulating the microbiological activity.
– Since the nematode can stay 3-5 years in the soil and up to 23 years in seeds, no longer grow large areas of onions, garlic, leeks and asparagus on the infested land.
– For small areas, onions can be interspersed with marigold. Nematodes attack will be greatly diminished.
Chemical treatments to combat the nematode are contraindicated since the attacked vegetables are consumed mainly raw.
